British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.
The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of entry passages down to the depot... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.
There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.
The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
IS - referred to as ISIS - enforced militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This action shows our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.
UK warplanes have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.
"I must thank all the members of British forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey added. "Including them were a great many British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, highlights how British military are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."
During December, the US military executed what it called a "major assault" against Daesh sites in the country, after an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.
The U.N. reports Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
