Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Replay systems will be launched at The Championships this year.
Players will gain the right to contest certain calls made by the official, mirroring the practice currently in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This development comes just a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine specific situations, including:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
- Possible interference end of a rally.
Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can initiate.
Practical Application
A recent incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire watched a video and determined the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its events.
Further Updates
Another change at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.
Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
